Reading Room: In Conversation with Michael Traill
Michael joined SVA as founding CEO in 2002 after 15 years as a co-founder and Executive Director of Macquarie Direct Investment.

Interviewed by Jan Owen, CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians, Michael will share his journey and what moved him to "jump ship".

I wrote ‘Jumping Ship’ for two reasons. First it’s a shortcut. I get asked a lot, “Why did you jump ship after 15 years at Macquarie Bank to work in the social sector?” The book explains why, and it seems to be a story that resonates when I share it in conversation. Second and perhaps more important, I wanted to share what I learnt in the 15 years since I ‘jumped ship’.

Social Impact Bonds are gaining popularity across Australia and internationally, and more states are getting on board. Three years after the first SIBs in NSW were launched, we are bringing representatives of several Australian states together to discuss the future of government as an enabler of social outcomes. What lessons can be learned from cooperations between government, private sector and public sector? Why should investors engage in such deals?

Workshop: Impact Investing - "How To" For Foundations
Ben Thornley and Kylie Charlton facilitate a high-value workshop building off their work with large and small foundations alike.

The session mirrors the real-world approach that most foundations take to invest investing - beginning with the necessarily rigorous effort to align around a core set of values and investment intentions, and only then moving to developing the appropriate structure and strategy for deploying capital. The most successful impact investments by foundations benefit from this comprehensive, holistic approach, which will be described in detail and tested in large- and small-group exercises and discussions.

Questions considered in the workshop include:
  • What are the right approaches to ensuring all a foundation's key leaders are in alignment on impact investing (i.e. the executive team, investment office, trustees, and service providers)?
  • What is the appropriate role for impact investing in meeting a foundation's priority financial and social objectives?
  • How do other foundations approach impact investing, and why?
  • What are the legal and regulatory issues to be aware of in impact investing?
  • What are the operational and management challenges that are common to foundations making impact investments, and how do others solve for them?
This workshop is especially suited for Trusts and Foundations.
